Sustainability Statement
At The Living Seed Company, sustainability is at the heart of our purpose. As lifelong environmentalists and activists, we strive to bring these values into every aspect of our work and daily operations. We exist to reconnect people with the natural world through organic, heirloom, open-pollinated seed and practical education in the art of seed saving.
For generations, seed saving was simply a way of life, an essential tradition passed from one family to the next. At The Living Seed Company, we are dedicated to helping our gardening community remember their roots and reconnect with the timeless practice of growing, saving, and stewarding seed for future generations.
The Living Seed Company has been certified organic through CCOF and USDA since 2012.
Sustainability is a way of life for us and those that work for us.
How We Grow
-
Regenerative Agriculture: We prioritize organic and regenerative practices on our farm. We build and grow our soil through the use of compost, cover crops and no- till and enhancing our biodiversity.
- Land Stewardship: We care for our 25 acre land and forest with the deepest integrity through the removal of invasive species by hand and encouraging the natural regeneration of native trees, medicinal plants and native forest communities. Over the six years of stewarding our land, we have chosen to mow less and cultivate meadows instead. This creates habitat, food and forage for many resident and migrating animals.
-
Seed Integrity: We grow & curate organic, open-pollinated and heirloom varieties supporting resilient food systems and seed sovereignty.
-
Pollinator Health: We promote and practice principals that protect and support bees, butterflies, bats, and beneficial insects by avoiding harmful pesticides and encouraging habitat and using IPM to encourage a proper balance on our farm. All of our flower seeds are neonicotinoids-free.
How We Operate
-
Renewable Energy: Half of our operations run on solar-power, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and cutting our operational footprint.
- Low Impact Operations: We use 100% battery-powered tools from our garden tools and mower to chainsaws, augers, and carpentry equipment. This reduces emissions, noise pollution, and our dependence on fossil fuels.
-
Materials: We continually evaluate packaging for durability, recyclability, and waste reduction, and we favor right-sized shipments to minimize materials and emissions. All of our mailing envelops are FSC certified.
-
Water : In our gardens, we use mulch, compost, and efficient irrigation to conserve water and build long-term soil moisture. We source all our own water from our deep within the earth from our wells.
- Seed Packets : All of our Living Seed branded seed packets as well as our custom seed packets are printed on FSC certified paper.
- Collection Pouches : All our collection pouches are made from biodegradable materials and of course are reusable.
How We Serve Our Communities
-
Education & Access: We share practical knowledge—gardening tips, seed-saving skills, and ecological design—so more people can grow nutrient-dense food at home, schools, and in their own home and communities.
-
Local Partnerships: We collaborate with farmers, educators, and conservation groups to expand native habitat, preserve varietal diversity, and strengthen regional food security.
- Giving Seed Program : Over the course of the last 15 years we have donated tens of thousands of seeds to organizations globally. Because we believe that everyone should have access to vibrant, organic and open-pollinated seeds.
