Organic Non-GMO Open-Pollinated Royalty Purple Bush Bean Seeds

Royalty Purple is a tender, flavorful heirloom bush bean prized for its striking ornamental beauty and reliable garden performance. Compact, self-supporting plants produce vibrant purple flowers, deep purple foliage, and slightly curved, stringless pods that grow 4–6 inches long. When cooked, the beans transform from rich purple to deep green, adding visual interest from garden to plate.

Introduced in 1957 by Dr. Elwyn Meader at the University of New Hampshire, this cultivar was bred for resilience and adaptability. It is especially valued for its strong germination in cool, wet soil, making it an excellent choice for early planting and unpredictable spring conditions. The tidy bush habit requires no trellising and performs well in small gardens, raised beds, and container plantings.

Highly productive and easy to grow, Royalty Purple Bush Beans are delicious fresh, lightly cooked, or preserved. They are well-suited for canning and are especially excellent for blanching and freezing, maintaining their texture and flavor long after harvest. A time-tested heirloom with ornamental appeal and practical versatility, Royalty Purple delivers beauty, flavor, and dependable yields for gardeners across a wide range of climates.

This tender and tasty ornamental has distinct purple flowers and leaves.

Gardener Tips

Soak seeds in water for 30 minutes and add an inoculant, if needed, before planting. Mulch at base of plants. Plant every 2-3 weeks for successive harvest. Use tipi, corn, or trellis for support.

Harvesting Tips

Harvest when pods are young, tender, and fully colored—typically when they reach 4"-6" long. At this stage, the beans are stringless, crisp, and at their peak flavor.

Frequent harvesting encourages plants to continue producing and extends the harvest window.

Use two hands or garden snips to avoid damaging the plant, as bush beans can be easily uprooted if pulled too hard. Check plants every few days during peak production.

To save seed or enjoy as shell or dry beans, allow pods to mature fully on the plant until they dry and turn tan.

Storage Tips

For preservation, harvest pods just before the seeds inside begin to swell. These beans are excellent for blanching and freezing, as well as for canning.
