Culinary sage, scientifically known as Salvia officinalis, has a long and storied history dating back thousands of years.  Native to the Mediterranean region sage has been cultivated and used for culinary, medicinal, and ceremonial purposes since ancient times.  The ancient Greeks and Romans held sage in high regard, considering it a sacred herb with powerful healing properties.  In ancient times, sage was revered for its medicinal properties and was used to treat various ailments, including digestive issues, sore throats, and respiratory infections.

The Greek physician Hippocrates, often referred to as the "Father of Medicine," praised sage for its healing properties and recommended it for its therapeutic benefits.

Prized for its distinctive flavor and aroma and is used to flavor meats, soups, and stews, and it remains a staple herb in Mediterranean cuisine to this day.  One of our favorite ways to use culinary sage is to lightly cook it in butter until it becomes crispy and then sprinkled over squash soup - yum!

Sage has held symbolic significance in various cultures throughout history. It was associated with wisdom, longevity, and protection, and was often used in rituals and ceremonies.

In medieval Europe, sage was believed to ward off evil spirits and was used as a protective herb in homes and gardens.

Today, sage is widely used in contemporary cuisine, both in traditional Mediterranean dishes and in innovative culinary creations around the world.  Culinary sage is cherished by gardeners and herbalists for its easy cultivation, ornamental beauty, and benefit in supporting pollinators.
